Reflecting on another year of unexpected challenges, we are reminded once again of that classic phrase, “It takes a village.” This phrase is said so often that to some it may lose the weight of its truth, but at USAssist Polyclinic Fund, we understand just how profound these words are. 

We are an organization dedicated to supporting patients and families faced with the crushing weight of financial burdens following their discharge from a hospital or care facility. We work daily to break down barriers for those struggling to manage the significant cost of a medical event or hospital visit because they have been denied (charitable) medical debt relief assistance from their healthcare providers.

Our goal is not only to find a way to support those carrying the weight of medical debt but also to help create lasting change in the healthcare system to ensure equitable healthcare for all patients. But it’s a big job, and we need the support of individuals like you to help reshape this aspect of the healthcare system. We firmly believe that together, we can effect lasting change. We are empowered to drive forward in our mission using the following objectives as a roadmap:

• Create and implement a quality, comprehensive database of reliable healthcare and business contacts, including US, North American, and African resources. We want to use this data to promote our brand and mission, and to aid in the networking of thought partners, who are committed to change.  

•  Leverage the resources in the directory to generate impactful support funds for charitable medical debt relief, by collaborating with multiple networks and strategic healthcare support partners and sponsors to enhance fundraising efforts. 

• Advocate on behalf of those applicants who qualify to negotiate special charity care allowances and pricing with medical service providers. Ensuring we support them in a way that respects the requirements of the process but ensures equal access to the same forgiveness opportunities.

• Assist healthcare service providers with the resources and information needed to support partial payments for debt-impacted patients and their families through the US-Assist Patient Account Polyclinic Fund. Allowing those carrying the crushing weight of medical debt to economically regroup so they can focus on recovery. 

We believe that recovering from an illness is hard enough and that patients and their families should be able to focus on recovery, and not just repayment. But the solution cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach. So, our carefully crafted objectives focus on building a network, sharing knowledge, and leveraging the work we do together to impact the greater good. 

Every year U.S. hospitals and affiliated physician practice groups receive millions of applications for (charitable) medical debt relief submitted by individual patients and by families facing a financial crisis. Of those applying nearly 80% meet the guidelines for assistance, because if this, it's not possible for healthcare providers to process medical debt relief applications without applying additional criteria. And, since no government support is available, many are left to navigate this on their own.
